FREE music opportunities for young people
posted 4 March 2010
Music of Life Foundation provides high quality musical education and performance opportunities for youngsters with disabilities and special needs. The organisation’s unique approach suggests that the best way to solve the problem of the exclusion of disabled young musicians from the music industry is to integrate them fully into mainstream performances of leading music groups, thus taking the focus away from their disability and enabling them to enjoy the same opportunities and experiences available to any musician.
Recruiting now!
We are constantly searching for children and young people with disabilities and special needs who are as passionate about music as we are. If you are a parent or a teacher of a child who you think might benefit from opportunities we provide, you are welcome to contact us to arrange an initial consultation.
How do we work?
Music of Life specialises in provision of one-to-one tuition, choral, instrumental and composers’ workshops and facilitating youngsters’ access to the country's conservatoires. The highlights of the Foundation’s activities are concerts where young, disabled musicians sing in the choir side by side with professional choristers while others take their place as instrumentalists in the orchestra and appear as co-soloists alongside acclaimed musicians. For those involved, the experience becomes a key point in their lives, encouraging some of them to work towards professional careers.
What are the requirements?
- You need to be between 8 and 25 to take part in our exciting projects that range from school workshops to spectacular symphony concerts.
- Passion for music is a must. Even if you have little or no experience we can work with you and train you to a very high standard – provided you want to go for it!
- For singers: good voice, ability to keep in tune and pace; ability to read music is desirable, but not absolutely crucial. For instrumentalists: for most projects you need to be grade 6 upwards with good command and understanding of your instrument.
What is my commitment?
Arrangements vary by project, but generally you will need to have several one-to-one lessons with a dedicated teacher who will travel to your home or school and attend 2 to 8 workshops and/or weekly rehearsals prior to each concert you take part in.
What support is available?
Music of Life provides individual lessons and can provide transport (including adapted vehicles) for attending workshops, rehearsals and concerts where necessary. We can also contribute towards the project-related costs of carers and special accommodation.
