20% off tickets to Zaïde at Sadler's Wells

Thursday 24 and Saturday 26 June 2010

Conducted by Ian Page, the Classical Opera Company and the Orchestra of the Classical Opera Company.

A major new completion of Mozart's unfinished opera, Zaïde, this eagerly-awaited production will première at Sadler's Wells on 24 June, followed by a second performance on 26 June, and will subsequently tour to the Lyceum Theatre Sheffield, Theatre Royal Bath and the Buxton Festival, constituting a total of seven performances nationwide.

About the production

Zaïde was written in 1779-80, and lies between Il Re Pastore and Idomeneo in Mozart’s operatic output. The work contains a series of superb numbers, most famously Zaïde’s meltingly beautiful aria “Ruhe sanft”, but its comparative neglect is due to the fact that both score and story are clearly incomplete.

For the Classical Opera Company’s new production the score has been completed by Mozart specialist Ian Page with contemporaneous music written by Mozart, which gives the work a musical consistency and integrity. Award-winning poet Michael Symmons Roberts has written a new English translation of the sung text, and the dialogue is being created by the rising young playwright Ben Power, in collaboration with director Melly Still, who directed an acclaimed production of Rusalka at Glyndebourne last summer.

About the cast

The cast is led by exciting South African soprano Pumeza Matshikiza in the title role, who was also a recent Jette Parker Young Artist at the Royal Opera House. She is joined by rising young tenor Andrew Goodwin, who recently sang the role of Tamino at the Sydney Opera House, as her lover Gomatz. The role of Soliman is sung by Mark Le Brocq, whose previous work with the company includes the title roles in Mitridate, re di Ponto and Lucio Silla, while Amy Freston, acclaimed for her work at Glyndebourne and Opera North, creates the role of Perseda. The cast is completed by former ENO Young Artist William Berger as Allazim and Australian bass-baritone Simon Lobelson as Osmin. This outstanding cast will be joined by the vibrant period-instrument Orchestra of the Classical Opera Company, conducted by Ian Page.
